Elementary School is a fun and challenging time for your child. It's a time to build friendships and discover new subjects and special interests. The elementary school curriculum is usually a general education that exposes your child to the arts, technology, music, math and literature, inclusive of phonics, spelling, handwriting and language, sicence, social studies and physical education. As he/she learns and is being taught in the various subjects, he or she will find out the subjects that stimulate him or her the most and continue to be challenged throughout their educational experience at The Palm Desert Learning Tree Center.

In elementary school, inclusive of Kindergarten Prep through Fifth grades, students will learn core subjects and develop fundamental skills. We have chosen some new materials for this school year which we are very excited about. The A Beka curriculum is now being used in Mathematics, Phonics, Language Arts, and Social Studies. In the Kindergarten-Prep program we use:

The Beginning to Read, Write, and Listen program for reading and comprehensive language designed by Macmillan/McGraw Hill. There are 26 letter books designed each for a 2 week lesson including such lessons as name recognition, how to write it and sound the letter, and a list of words that stand for the letter. In the beginning it is important for your child to remember only one sound for each letter. Your child traces, identifies upper and lower case, the shape, pictures whose names begin with the letter sound, draw pictures of things whose names begin with each letter sound, identify animal sounds on tape and listen to a mystery sound and draw a picture to show what made the sound. Each week the letter book takes on various learning elements as to create new and creative teaching skills to children. The books are colorful and promote many learning lessons.

Scott Foresman-Addison Wesley Mathematics Kindergarten program is used for the Kindergarten -Prep classroom. Your child learns positioning and sorting, counting and writing numbers up to 100, graphing and patterns, measurement, time and money, geometry and fractions, and readiness for addition and subtraction. Through continued practice, children learn to master these concepts.

Other books used in the Kindergarten Prep program include: Frank Schaeffer Science units, A Beka Writing and Phonics, and Numbers Writing Tablet. Social Studies, Music, Technology, and Physical Education are taught once or twice weekly with teacher resources.
